Earth What?

Submitted by Sam White on Mon, 04/21/2008 - 18:23.

Tomorrow is Earth Day (April 22). I don’t know about you, but I think I’ll celebrate by drinking something out of a Styrofoam cup while driving my SUV around town with the A/C going full blast—maybe while the windows are rolled down.

I used to be into ecology. This was back when it meant taking care of what we’ve got, planet-wise. Being an ecologist meant not littering, picking up the litter of others, soil and water conservation, planting a tree (or two) whenever you cut one down, and maybe even trying to cut down on smog.

But then, like so many other “good” ideas, it got high-jacked. Today (or tomorrow, or last April 22, depending on when you’re reading this) “Earth Day” is all about the hoax of global warming, how we should be more dependant of foreign oil, and how the environmental disaster known as ethanol is the wave of the future.

We were called, way back in Genesis, to take care of the planet, but I see no scriptural mandate to let the planet be our god (in fact, that’s pretty much what Baal worship was and God—the one, true, God—was pretty hostile toward it) nor to be morons.

We should be drilling in ANWAR. We’ve got the technology—and the will—to do it cleanly. We should be building de-salinization plants all along the coast (I wish my home state of Texas would start doing this now and add billions of dollars of fresh water revenue to our already healthy coffers). We should keep picking up trash and keep planting trees and any time we can get rid of smog without unduly penalizing the businesses that produce it, we should. And we should be building new refineries, which I am confident would be WAY cleaner than the last new one—which was built in the U.S. over three decades ago!

Oh … and happy Earth Day!
