In the Land of Garison Fitch
Submitted by Sam White on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 13:00.
Yesterday, I drove up La Plata Canyon. If you’ve never heard of it, then shame on you ‘cause La Plata Canyon is the home of Garison Fitch. It was also the home of Louis L’Amour, which is how it came to be the home of Garison Fitch.
It’s easy to miss La Plata Canyon. Heading west out of Durango* on your way to Mesa Verde, there’s a green sign and an arrow pointing to an unassuming little road heading off into a valley on the north side of the road. There’s a restaurant on the corner, but not much else.
BE UTIFICATION PROJECT

That's what the sign says. I don't know if the "A" fell off--which would be ironic for a city who's every sign plays up on the fact that the name of the town starts with "A"-- or if it's on purpose, but as you leave the Amarillo airport (officially: "Rick Husband International Airport")* and pull out onto the imaginatively named "Airport Boulevard", the sign says that the "BE UTIFICATION" project was paid for by a local bank.**
The project consisted of planting nice grass, shrubs and trees alongside the road people who have landed at the airport are going to take to get into town.
Reconciliation

1983, former IRA member Ira McClosky stood on stage with protestant military member Jimmy Gibson—both men on furlough from prison but now converted Christians—and said, “Before, if I had seen Jimmy on the street, I would have shot him. Now he’s my brother in Christ and I would die for him.”
How does something like that happen?

7.19.9 – Conversion
I’ve been building this faith pyramid this summer to remind us all what we’re about. God is. He has spoken. There is truth. God loves the world. God in 3 persons. These are all important and interlocked.
God in Three Persons

7.12.9 – God in Three Persons
For five weeks now, I’ve been building our “Faith Pyramid”. Why?
Because we live in a country where most people identify themselves as Christians. But then, we see these same people engaged in very un-Christian behavior (of varying degrees). And we think to ourselves, “Man! That don’t seem Christian to me!” But then, that begs the question: what is Christian?
