It has been brought to my attention that my novel "Psalm 88" has a title which doesn't tell the reader anything about the novel. Not only that, it may have mislead some readers into thinking it was actually a commentary on the 88th Psalm, which it isn't.

On the other hand, the people who have read it have loved it. So, would changing the title put it into the hands of more people?

With that in mind, I'm actually considering a title change. Let me give you a brief synopsis of the book before I give you my title ideas (so far): Joe Whitcomb is a preacher who--due to the untimely death of his wife and child a year before--has come to the conclusion that he hates God. Ellen Leades is a young woman from an abusive background who is trying to kick alcohol through sheer will-power. Their burgeoning friendship seems like the answer to each other their problems, until they are suddenly reminded that neither has really dealt with their problems. They've just been running away and running with someone seemed like a good idea.

Here's what one reader had to say: "I assume you read the first Garison Fitch novel. Sometime you might also wish to read Psalm 88 (also by Samuel Ben White). It is a SUPERIOR Christian fiction novel—one you could proudly recommend to your non-sci-fi reading friends. It is poorly named. For over a year I thought it was a commentary on Psalm 88 (which I was not interested in reading). Then White clued me in to the fact that it was just a fictional novel. I read it and was VERY impressed. In Psalm 88, White establishes a good model for drawing people into the Gospel through fiction (except for the title)."

Now, here are some of the alternate titles I have thought of so far (let me know if any of them would make you more--or less--interested in reading the novel):

The Untraveled Road of Recovery
The Preacher Who Hated God
The Preacher vs. God
Denial, Recovery and Starting Over

I won't tell you which one I'm leaning toward at the moment, so let me know what you think.
